The Playbook: The Detective’s Guide to Winning in Pickleball
Words I like: You don’t win by trying to out last your opponent with consistency. You win by cracking your opponents code.
THE PLAYBOOK: The Detective’s Guide to Winning in Pickleball
Detectives don’t guess.
They follow a process.
That same process can win you matches—even when you start off getting crushed.
I learned this in the gold medal match where we lost Game 1 by a brutal 1–11.
Instead of panicking, I went full detective mode.
Here’s the exact 5-step process I used:
Gather Information
Use the first few points (sometimes the first game) as an opportunity to gather information on your opponents.I tested them in the first few points—baseline, midcourt, and kitchen—to see who cracked first.
Identify Patterns
I put myself in their shoes.
Where were they aiming under pressure?
Was there any meaning to their “random” shots? We found out that they were dominating me with the dink, and throwing me off the court over and over again.
Find the Strategy
Once I spotted the patterns, I built a plan to take away their strengths. We decided to take 2 steps back from the kitchen line to give us more time to react to their aggressive dinking, so we could sneak attack at the right moments.
We would randomly jump forward to the kitchen line when they got used to hitting the ball past the kitchen and instantly win the point.
Test the Theory
We tried it in Game 2.
It worked—they couldn’t use their superpower anymore.Exploit the Weakness
From there, we kept using the winning strategy until the match was over.
Final score after the adjustment? 11–5, 11–2. Gold medal secured.
Why it works:
Detectives don’t have to be perfect—they just need one solid lead to crack the case.
In pickleball, you only need one winning strategy to take the match.
As promised, improvement in under a minute.
